Construction Of First Ever Highway Between Mozambique And Tanzania Begins
Construction of the first ever all weather tarmac road in Mozambique to its northern neighbor Tanzania was launched by the country's president Filipe Nyusi on October 2, 2018, reported some media sources on October 5, 2018.
When completed, the 165 kilometer long highway will link the city of Mueda in Cabo Delgado province with the Unity Bridge at the township of Negomano on the border with Tanzania.
The state-of-the-art Unity Bridge over the Ruvuma River, that links the townships of Negomano and Mtambaswala in Mozambique and Tanzania respectively, was completed and opened for traffic in 2010. However, since then, it has remained a white elephant with hardly any vehicular traffic at all, due to the fact that, while there is an all weather tarmac access road to the bridge on Tanzania's side, there isn't any on Mozambique's side. The new highway is expected to provide such access on Mozambique's side, hence giving the landmark bridge some life at last!
The highway project will be carried out in two phases, by a Chinese construction firm at a cost of $72 million. The latter is grant from the African Development Bank.
