Kenya's Kahui Calls For International Help For Her Banned Gay Movie Rafiki

Kenya's first ever movie to be screened live at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, is a gay movie called Rafiki.

The movie that is about a steamy lesbian romance story involving two beautiful girls of the capital Nairobi, was featured at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 held on May 8 - 19, 2018. It became an instant success at the world renowned cultural event, with some movie experts ranking it in their top 30 best movies from Cannes Film Festival 2018.

Notwithstanding, however, the popular sexy movie has never been screened in its country of origin, Kenya! That is simply because it was banned right after its completion by the country's film classification agency, namely Kenya Film Classification Board for its homosexual content. Homosexuality in Kenya like in all other East African countries is forbidden by law.

But the director of the movie, Wanuri Kahiu does not share the conservative stance of some of her fellow Kenyans, let alone other East Africans. On May 17, 2018, some media sources that spoke to her during the Cannes Film Festival 2018 in Cannes, reported she castigated in the strongest manner the banning of her movie by Kenya Film Classification Board. Saying the ban was a repression of ideas and stories, and particularly violation of freedom of expression.

Accordingly, she called upon the international film community for help and support. She clearly indicated she wants her movie to be screened in her homeland, and said upon her return to Kenya from Cannes, she and her colleagues will ponder what to do about the ban.
