The government of Zimbabwe announced on May 17, 2017, that the country will build a platinum refinery in 2018, in a joint venture with an Australian company called Kelltech Ltd. The refinery will cost $200 million, and expected to take about 18 - 24 months to build. The new refinery will be the third in the country. The other two are now in advanced stages of construction, and are owned by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), and Impala Platinum (Zimplats). Zimbabwe has the world's largest reserves of platinum after South Africa. The country like several other African countries, want to ensure that raw mineral ore alias mineral concentrates from their vast mineral deposits, are processed locally instead of the current practice by which concentrates are exported. Through local processing of raw mineral ore, African countries will maximize economic benefits from their natural wealth, through creation of employment and increased revenues. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2017 Africauptodate.
