16 Killed In Protests In Kampala After Opposition Presidential Nominee Bobi Wine Is Arrested

Africa | Uganda November 19, 2020

At least 16 people have been killed in violent clashes between protesters and police in Uganda’s capital Kampala, reported some media on November 19, 2020.

The protests are said to have erupted on November 18, 2020 after the country’s popular opposition member of parliament (MP) and presidential nominee Bobi Wine was arrested earlier during the day in the eastern city of Jinja while campaigning. Protests in connection with the arrest of MP Bobi Wine are also said to be ongoing in other parts of the country.

Reportedly, police there said Bobi Wine was arrested for violating the country’s coronavirus electoral guideline that limits election campaign rallies to crowds not exceeding 200 people. The former music artist has been arrested several times before after making his presidential ambition public. He has always maintained that his perpetual arrests were politically motivated.

Bobi Wine (38), born Robert Kyagulanyi, seems to pose a big political threat to the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni (76) who has been on the throne since 1986 and bidding for a 6th term in office, in the country’s forthcoming presidential election.

Uganda’s forthcoming presidential election will be held on January 14, 2021.
